The House Hunt Begins

Too far. Too dumpy. Too small. Leo and I have begun our hunt for a house. Like Goldilocks, we’re looking for one that’s juuuuussst right.

Fortunately, we have a lot of time.

We looked at three houses Saturday. Our plan is to buy in May or June, so this initial foray into the wilds acquainted us with good house hunting techniques.

Our first (see image at right) option seemed to have it all: great location, great amount of space and a great price. We knew going in what that meant: needs work.

Uh, yes. Our real estate agent guessed $80,000 of work. Hmmm … While we don’t mind putting some money and our own elbow grease into a house, that may not quite work out. Besides, there was only one bathroom upstairs. NEXT!

The second house is brand new and lovely in many ways. Wood floors, nice cabinets, new appliances, plus a big backyard. But the “bedrooms” were tiny. One couldn’t even fit a bed into it. Plus, it just didn’t feel right. NEXT!

Our final stop was  … well, fine. Slightly small kitchen, but generally an OK space. Still, the location wasn’t ideal and we just weren’t blown away.

So the slow hunt continues. As I said, we’re not in a hurry. But I am looking forward to the day when we walk into a house and it feels like home.
