The phrase “the joys of home ownership” is often said with sarcasm among our late 20s, early 30s friends, who are also now purchasing homes and finding such “joys” as leaky roofs, broken water heaters and more. It’s so commonly repeated that my colleagues and I (all new homeowners) have agreed to ban its utterance from our office.
However, I have nothing but real joy to share so far.
Leo and I moved in May 11. We unpacked quickly and managed to throw a stellar housewarming party exactly one week later. Since then, we’ve spent time settling in. A new house needs a few touches here and there, such as a welcome mat, new light bulbs for the porch and many other random items.
Our first semi-large project is in the works this weekend. The front of the house looks unfinished under the porch, like the gaps in an 8-year-old’s smile. So last weekend Leo and I bought and then painted some wooden lattice.
This weekend, he’s installing it under the porch. Based on my extensive home project experience — I grew up in a house built in 1906 — we’ll probably be making a trip over to Ace hardware sometime today.
But that’s OK. It’s still fun to own a home.
A few hours later ….
TA-DA!
