Kickoff: About the Lemon Cake Dessert Challenge

Dessert is on! This year, we’re undertaking a fun challenge: obtain and try every dessert in the video game Lemon Cake. That’s 42 desserts or baked goods.

Why?

Well, why not? Life is short; why not gamify some of it? This one was Leo’s idea, a fun scavenger hunt that comes with the bonus: deliciousness. Further, we’ll be trying more of our local bakeries in the process.

What is Lemon Cake?

For the unfamiliar, Lemon Cake is an independent dessert simulation game, found on Switch. Unlike some intense bakery games, where things end up on fire, this one is chill, a way to relax. Leo started the game. I typically dislike sim games, but I soon found myself mesmerized by the light music and relaxed timing. Our 8-year-old daughter soon caught the Lemon Cake bug, and now we’ve all played. In the game, you slowly rebuild  an empty bakery with the help the former owner, who is now a ghost. She teaches you new recipes periodically, so you work your way up to her very favorite, the last one: Lemon Cake. The recipes are in seven categories: Bread, Donut, Pie, Frozen, Cake, Candy, and Cookies.

Here’s the list that we are working on, in checklist form: Link on Google Drive

The Rules

A fun challenge comes with a few rules. After all, if we just bought and ate every dessert, it’s less fun. So:

1. The item must be as close as possible to the one in the game. For example, the game has a honey macaron. We can’t cheat by eating some other macaron.

2. We must try to find the item made locally, whether that’s Raleigh, the Triangle or beyond.

3. If we can’t find it at a locally owned shop, restaurant, or bakery, we can buy it from a chain.

4. If we cannot find it at all, we will find a recipe and bake it. Depending on the item, we may choose to bake over buying at a chain.

5. The item must be of high quality. For example, a chocolate bar is on the list. Running to Publix and buying a generic bar doesn’t count.

6. We must document our dessert moments. We created a list with each item and its image from the game. Each time we try an item, we’ll check it off, blog about it, and take a pic.

7. We only have to obtain one of each, but we all must try a bite.

I watch The Great British Baking Show. At the start of each challenge, the two hosts say, “On your mark, get set, BAKE!” With that in mind, On your mark, get set, EAT!
