One of the reasons this challenge is fun is that it takes us to new places and forces us to try new things. In this case, however, it was a return to a place we’d been before — Yellow Dog Bread Co.
Downtown Raleigh used to be a bakery desert, until The Year of the Bakery, when at least three showed up within months of each other. Yellow Dog was one of those early ones, and it’s not far from my work.
In the game, a French Baguette is very easy and fast to make. Thus, you make a lot of them. In real life, we haven’t eaten that many great baguettes (except when in France), so I was pleased to see a pretty collection of them at Yellow Dog. Bread isn’t something you go out to eat, and the bakery, while it has many excellent qualities, does not have great indoor seating. So I picked up a loaf and walked back to work. If I closed my eyes and ignored the parking lot, I could almost pretend I was walking in Paris. Almost.
We ate it with just about the same level of fanfare, slicing it up to accompany a weeknight dinner. But it was absolutely delicious — soft and fluffy on the inside, crusty on the outside, and quite tasty dipped in olive oil or doused with some butter.

Sometimes, it’s good to revisit the old, and discover something new. We’ll be sure to pick up a tasty baguette for dinner again soon.
